Once the kids left home, we ended up with zero trick or treaters at our house on a state highway. No kids = no money on candy = no candy wrappers in the landfill. No kids = no parties or haunted houses = money saved. We do put up decorations (ones I buy at garage sales or thrift stores and reuse each year).

If the stigma of thrifting gets to you, remember, it’s not “used”, it’s “vintage”. Whatever is left unclaimed at the end of the evening gets donated. Check the Kids Section. For basics like t-shirts or socks, see if you can find a better deal in the kid’s section. Spend the evening trying on eachothers’ discards.

I shop at thrift stores frequently and I am always amazed at how much I see with store tags still on the product. But that store credit is much better than sending it to the thrift store as a donation. I use this spreadsheet.

If you are in more of a hurry, find a thrift store instead. But, find one in a high end neighborhood, one where the store sorts through the donations to select only the best. For example, if you want to buy slightly used home furnishings, find an upscale neighborhood where the kids are mostly grown. Toys for the grand-kids.
