I sanded it down in my dad’s garage. I didn’t have a pressing need for it, so I really could not find the motivation to do something with it. Since my primary objective with this rehab was to keep costs down, I opted to use the original hardware. I did this one while I was still living with my parents, actually.

For me, going to sales is not just a means to find things I need at rock bottom prices, it is also entertainment. Here is a short list of some of my favorite finds at garage, estate and thrift store sales. It was missing the software, but thanks to the internet, I had no trouble finding a driver that worked.

You can visit garage sales, local flea markets and scratch and dent stores to locate used furniture that needs to be refurbished. If you find a table with a leg missing, you can buy four matching stair posts or use recycled bench legs to create a unique centerpiece for your living area. Look around your apartment for inspiration.

Garage sale and thrift store furniture bargains abound. You can also find older, quality items at used furniture stores. Although upholstery material can be very expensive (think $25+ a yard), you can find it on sale. I used a standard hardware store staple gun that shot thick 3/8″ staples and was very hard to use.
