Years ago, Mom introduced me to the idea of going to garage sales. People sell the darnedest things at their garage sales. Garage sales take time, you have to hit quite a few before you find the item you want or need. I look for the neighborhood sales, which are usually either in spring or fall.

Another source of clutter with kids is gifts that well-meaning friends and relatives give. We want toys, especially toys that aren’t multi-purpose, to be kept to a minimum. While I appreciate the thought, those toys don’t get used often, and I feel bad donating them or giving them away.

Those affected by our recent Great Recession have had the benefits of saving reinforced as well. Once baby comes, we might become major spenders on toys, a new home, a bigger car and more. As a young mom, I saved like mad – going to garage sales, thrift stores and accepting hand me downs on toys and clothing.

I got brand new clothes , a stroller, a playpen, toys, blankets, the list goes on and on. Many of the other items I needed like cloth diapers and clothes for the baby in bigger sizes I bought from garage sales. They did not have a large toy room with so many toys they don’t know what to play with.

I took at least three trunks full of “stuff” to Goodwill, I had a garage sale, and I sold things online. And then, well, like a weed that just won’t stop growing, the stuff started piling up again. Three years ago, before we moved to our current home, I decluttered. Boy, did I declutter. We loved the feeling.

Cradles, cribs, play pens, changing tables, strollers, high chairs, diapers, diaper bags, car seats, baby clothes and TOYS TOYS TOYS and more TOYS. We leave the nest – move out of Mom and Dad’s well stocked home. Kids will naturally accumulate stuff, even when they can’t buy it. You get stuff.
