When my own parents were the age that I am now, I was graduating from college. When my parents were my age, they were empty-nesters and converted my bedroom into a sewing room for my mother. My husband and I had children later in life. My children, however, are 9 & 7 and have just finished the third & first grades.

I had just graduated university and it was one of the first major purchases I made for myself. The texture of the faux fur is still nice and other than re-sewing the snaps in a couple places, it’s never needed repairs. No pics without the coat today, kids, it was too cold. But you can see my blouse. I got that coat about 10 years ago.

I also assumed I’d get a certain salary when graduating that I now know would have been exceptional. Sewing holes in clothes, using up leftovers before they go bad, finding free activities for my little on the weekends, checking buy nothing or marketplace before purchasing- I am always just looking for ways to spend money.

My mom cut coupons and sewed her own clothes and mine, as well. I learned from the best, but I believe that a personal finance course should be a requirement for both high school and college graduation. When they got married, they bought a duplex so that the rent money from the tenant in the upstairs apartment would pay the mortgage.
