Although I live 200+ miles away from my two grandkids, I try to get them for a week or so during the summer. There are many documented benefits to utilizing grandparents to watch grandkids. Among them may be reduced risks of alzheimers ; increased brain power , and lowered possibilities of depression. I’m one of them.

When she saw that her great-grandchildren were not writing thank you notes for her gifts to them, she sent their parents a set of Thank you note cards with envelopes and postage! From my Mother-in-laws perspective, the number one benefit to the great-grandkids of sending her a thank you note, is that she would continue to send them gifts.

If they are primary beneficiaries, the parents or guardians may have to go to court and get themselves designated as able to manage the account for the child. First, if I had managed to convert everything to a Roth, the grandkids would be swamped with hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. There are two problems with that in my mind.

If you understand why your parents are offering support, you may make a better decision on whether or not to accept it. They may be offering it for their own benefit, more than yours. Parental pride in ‘my daughter the doctor’ may play a role in their desire to fund at least part of school expenses.

The Grandkids are 9 and 12 now with lots of time before they have to start supporting themselves somehow. Many of you may have followed a similar unplanned path to your job or career. Although there are many interesting jobs in the world, some of them may be limited in terms of demand.

My Grandparents have lots of kids and even more grandkids. Add in the spouses, significant others and now great-grandchildren and that’s a ton of gifts. Others may have a different experience. In my family we make Christmas lists. If Grandad doesn’t get your list after Thanksgiving, you don’t get a gift.
