When I was growing up, my ideas about money were limited. Work at said job for 30 or 40 years. Retire and work no more. I first started changing the way I think about things when I realized that I didn’t want to work at a 9-5 job. Even though we bought a house in 2007, I never once expected it to be a money-maker.

I have casual ones for weekend days, dressy ones for evenings and even ones I wear to work. Lindsay honed her design, merchandising and manufacturing skills working summers at Polo Ralph Lauren’s leather goods division in New York City. Living in Florida I always wear sandals.

When my brother and I were growing up, our parents didn’t have much discretionary income. Our mom stayed home to raise us kids; she went to work part-time in the local school system after both my brother and I were in school. He diligently maintained our car and our house, doing all the work himself.

Although the positions are now (mostly) back to the 2007 levels, if I had dumped them quickly enough and then bought in after the crash I would be better off today.
