I am totally paraphrasing the year, but had it not been for the money in our emergency savings, we would most likely have used credit cards to survive. We spent the next few years building our savings back up to the level we had prior to 2007. What got us through financially? Our emergency fund.

Pre-coronavirus, I considered having 3 months of expenses saved in cash to be sufficient. Every night my first prayer is that this virus starts to mitigate, the curve flattens to a manageable level for our health care system, and lives are saved. I will eventually buy a machine, but for now, my morning coffee is secure.

In September 2019, my husband and I accomplished our biggest financial goal in our almost 20 years of marriage. When that loan was paid off, we put that full amount towards the third loan and this continued until September 2019. We applied some of this extra cash towards debt and the balance was saved for medical expenses.
