Don’t buy anything that is not on the list unless you forgot something truly important. It is always costlier than eating at home, and it makes you fat, no matter whether you are buying a quick snack at a fast food restaurant, vending machine or a convenience store. Purchase only Energy Star appliances. Insurance is costly.

Having our own car means we don’t have to rent one and we can bring a LOT from home. For example, when renting cabins, we spend most of the time there and cook most of our meals. In fact, we recently stayed at Fairfield, and they had a whole list of appliances that you could sign out for your stay. We almost always drive!

When they got married, they bought a duplex so that the rent money from the tenant in the upstairs apartment would pay the mortgage. I can’t even imagine how many repair bills from plumbers, electricians, appliance techs, and auto mechanics he has saved us over the years. The food you will actually eat is what is worth buying!

Facebook Marketplace (and local buy/sell groups) have made it much easier. Gently used clothing, baby items, furniture, electronics, small appliances, books, fitness equipment, and tools sell well. Locally, you can sell at farmer’s markets , holiday bazaars, and local Facebook buy/sell groups. Rent a room in your house.
