Once the kids left home, we ended up with zero trick or treaters at our house on a state highway. We do put up decorations (ones I buy at garage sales or thrift stores and reuse each year). Encourage your child to use their imaginations to come up with a costume out of materials on hand at home. Tip # 2 Recycle/reuse costumes.

I keep a roll of heavy paper (which I buy at Home Depot for about $11 for a roll about 2 inches thick and 2 feet wide) to use in wrapping packages, protecting floors during home projects, making garage sale signs and etc. I just printed them out on my ink jet home printer. Play test the game.

Last time I painted the exterior trim, the sills and trim pieces on many had to be repaired with wood filler due to rot. We are leaving 3 entry doors, the garage doors, the windows in the garage, the small kitchen window and a large picture window in the master sitting room in place. Window shopping is a challenge.

I save tape and paper and old paint drop sheets. We put in new windows this year at our 1985 home. I had to part with $35 to buy one of those paint masks to even be able to apply it. There are just two of us at home now. Help me out, am I being cheap or just smart about money? Believe me, brush on lacquer is s-t-i-n-k-y!

We shopped at garage sales, turned down the heat, combined errands to use less gas, didn’t buy a lot of prepared food, cooked at home and the like. I even made the kid’s play dough and finger paint. Peggy: Well, probably some of the same ones being espoused now (maybe our kids did pick up on some of our examples!).
