I’ve been an architect, day-care teacher to toddlers, and library clerk, but am currently a SAHM to a 14yo son and 9yo daughter. We share our home with a 70lb rescued mutt. Besides dealing with my sudden unemployment when my oldest child was a toddler, I was hoping to figure out a way to extend my time at home with him.

Get creative with some exercise ideas at home to save money in this area of your budget. Rent workout videos from the library. There are many options for exercising at home. Try walking around the neighborhood each day. Use soup cans or water bottles instead of weights. Put on some music and dance. Jump rope in place.

It is always costlier than eating at home, and it makes you fat, no matter whether you are buying a quick snack at a fast food restaurant, vending machine or a convenience store. Do you watch a lot movies at the theater or rent a lot of movies through a mail order service? Avoid this problem by carrying snacks wherever possible.

Back when I was engaged and living on my own for the first time (I lived with my parents while in grad school to save on rent), I went to the library a lot and found a copy of the Tightwad Gazette. Eventually, when I was married and working at a library I ordered my own copy of the Complete Tightwad Gazette–and I still have it!

Rent instead of own. If you calculate your mortgage interest, the cost of insurance and maintenance, buying can be much more expensive than renting. And if you rent, save money and then invest the difference. Go to the library. Instead of buying books, check them out of the library. Frugal gifting. Drink water.
