I haven't embraced a paper-free lifestyle yet. I still prefer a paper day planner over my google calendar. I prefer to read paper books over our e-reader. And I still use a filing cabinet for my office papers, instead of scanning them onto the computer. I filed our essential papers, but I wasn't purging at the same time.

And they will see that you put money aside in savings. Encourage them to save. Take them to the bank and let them see you make your deposits. Buy them a piggy bank and help them remember to feed it when they can. Let them open their own bank account. Take them into the bank.

Aside from a couple of brief forays into non-bank type accounts in the eighties and one family investment club, my investing experience dates to the early 1990’s. We finally had enough income left over after paying expenses and saving for kids to attend college to start investing it. Record keeping is tedious.

Our homeowners insurance and property taxes are not tied in with our mortgage so we receive those bills and are responsible for paying them instead of the bank that owns the mortgage. Get out a piece of paper and make a list of all your yearly, quarterly, non-monthly expenses. That used to be me. It was a horrible feeling.

You pick up a piece of paper and ask yourself these questions: Do I need to keep this? I managed to reduce the amount of paper on my desk to a very small pile, I shredded buckets of papers and trashed even more. I further simplified my life by making some changes to my banking. Do I need it on my work space?
