I love to buy things second hand. If you think buying used is just for people who are on a tight budget, think again. The most famous large family, the Duggars, routinely buy as much as they can used. Their motto is “Buy used and save the difference.” The Items We Typically Buy Used.

My cute kids when they were little I used to be a Spanish teacher until I stopped working to stay home with my kids. Although we had to invest in machines like a plucker and scalder for butchering chickens, as well as the animals and their shelters, eventually our home-raised meat will be basically free.

Plus, we require a lot less storage room for our wardrobe, which means when we get ready to buy a house, we won’t need huge walk-in closets. I’ve even read that some people wear long johns at home to endure lower heating temperatures, but we haven’t done that. Wait to buy new technology. Conserve gas.

In 2015 I’m challenging myself to rethink purchases by taking advantage of more cost effective solutions like borrowing, buying second hand, or just making do with what we already have. We also made a few new needed purchases for our home, such as a new patio umbrella and a cover for our gas grill.

Use reusable grocery bags, rather than the plastic bags to cart your groceries home from the store. Buying a coffee is a guilty splurge for me, but to be honest, the particular coffee shop brand that I love is sold in grocery stores, like Giant. Brew your coffee at home and take it along with you in a travel mug. Conserve water.
