Have you heard the old saying: “Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.”? We were poor, Mom and Dad lived every day showing us what it meant to ‘make it do’ and we often ‘did without’ Here are my thoughts on frugal ways to make things do. Buy good clothing, used.

If you can make your shoes last longer, you can tuck away the savings in that rainy day fund. If you dry them in the sun, it will help brighten the light colors and do some disinfecting. On plain leather shoes, scuff marks can usually be rubbed out with a damp cloth (and possibly a tiny bit of cleanser). Shoes are expensive.

Growing up in a large family, we had enough, but with the specter of inflation and bad job market (gotta love the 70’s and 80’s) , there was definitely a feeling of needing to make sure you had a cushion. Why do I want to save money? because I want my kid to look nice and getting clothes that fit can be hard.

In 2015 I’m challenging myself to rethink purchases by taking advantage of more cost effective solutions like borrowing, buying second hand, or just making do with what we already have. I found a pair of blue jeans for myself for $3 and some clothes for my daughters for $1 a piece. February Update.

When the ears were full and ripe she would pull one down and let me make a doll – using the cob for the body, the silk for the hair and the husk for the clothing. They used the berries to make a purple die and painted their own and each others bodies with it! Plus, it can be really inconvenient to “make do or do without!”
