We spoiled our children and we apparently are even more intent on doing so with our grandchildren! They rarely gave us toys or money. My parents were somewhat more interactive with their grandchildren (my kids). They drove the 200 mile trip on holidays and birthdays to celebrate with us. They tolerated our presence.

Although I live 200+ miles away from my two grandkids, I try to get them for a week or so during the summer. There are many documented benefits to utilizing grandparents to watch grandkids. Although using relatives to kid sit can be fraught with stress, anxiety and cause for family arguments, many families do it successfully.

When I was a young adult, out of college and into my first years of marriage, I cringed at the thought of getting money from my parents. I thought there would be ‘strings’ attached to the use of the money. Providing college money can help cushion that murky time between high school graduation and fully leaving the nest.

The money in the IRA can be used during your lifetime, but then can accumulate tax free while the next guy in line for it takes minimum distributions over his life. First, if I had managed to convert everything to a Roth, the grandkids would be swamped with hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.

The Grandkids are 9 and 12 now with lots of time before they have to start supporting themselves somehow. I didn’t even realize that most jobs required a doctorate in Psychology to really use the knowledge in a career. Another criteria used for this pick might be the length of the commute or the frequency of travel.
