It behooves you to understand these things because your broker may or may not try to educate you about them. For years, as a novice, I used Merrill Lynch and while my broker did a great deal to educate me about stocks and bonds, he never mentioned that I could set the price at which I wanted to buy or sell my stock!

Teachers income in Texas actually starts pretty good ($44,000 when I started), but it doesn’t increase much and there aren’t any bonuses (some years it doesn’t even increase WITH inflation…one year we didn’t even get a raise due to the economy). Constant communication is so important. We took advantage of having two incomes.
