After 7 years of renting it to vacationers on a nightly basis, and using it occasionally ourselves, I have decided to let a local company lease it on a yearly basis. Starting then, our nightly rental management company seemed to be unable to give us any rentals. Ours did and they were twice as high as the residential real estate taxes!

Not cashing that check from your mutual fund company. The mutual fund company, after several attempts to contact him, was required by law to escheat the assets in the fund to the state as ‘lost’ money. Not paying your real estate taxes. He refused to get a job, find a roommate or develop any source of income.

Not only will renovations provide pleasure and function to you, but they could increase the sale value of your home a bit. Possible sources include: Neighbors or real estate investors who tore out perfectly good materials and want to get rid of them. Garage or estate sales. Plan ahead. Want to redo your kitchen?

It seemed reasonable to devote a greater portion to real estate, in order to further diversify our portfolio. If we hadn’t sold stocks and mutual funds to come up with the money to close the sale (cash on the table), we wouldn’t have generated a huge capital gain in 2007. Diversify our investment holdings.
