On top of our normal day to day expenses, the new property taxes were due, we had more ownership expenses than we realized, and we had a family to feed. We had our daughters later in life and at a crucial time in our lives, I stopped our retirement contribution. I had to cut something from our spending and do it quickly.

And I was pregnant with our youngest daughter, so what should have been a joyous year was quite a stressful one. Also to top it off, I had a huge property tax due that month for our office building that was going to be difficult to pay for in light of the circumstances. It was a scary time for us. Our emergency fund.

Our daughter is 24 and was adopted from Eastern Europe when she was one week short of a year old. He married the love of his life almost two years ago, so now we have a daughter-in-law, too.
