Well, as much as somebody who works full time is ever able to be. Something that I’ve found throughout all of my trips to the many different places I’ve visited, is that food is always a cost that is hard to contain. In my free time I enjoy canning and preserving food (well, I enjoy the results of it, ha!), As a teenager, I saved quite a bit of the money I earned babysitting and working in a dining hall. Over time, I have realized that I had somewhat of an unhealthy way of depending on money for a sense of security and control.

My niece goes to Goodwill and buys what I can only describe as bags of junk, and she makes a full-time income selling it on eBay. Dining out, fast food drive-throughs, and Starbucks all have to stop. I actually do this a few times a year. You’d be amazed at the things people will buy. It’s just easy.

Limiting waste is what really drives most of the habits I have that would qualify as “frugal” – reducing/eliminating food waste, returning unneeded items, pursuing refunds, checking on warranties, repairing things, etc. For me, being in the kitchen and making food for people is an act of love.

My husband, Alan, and I live in a beautiful area of the northeast that’s full of mountains, lakes, and rivers and is popular with both tourists and second homeowners. We live on the side of a small mountain in a quiet, rural town, but we’re less than 20 miles from a city of about 25,000 people and its shopping and dining opportunities.
