Most telephones were on a party line (and yes the parties did ease drop on each other, but they also let us do ‘conference’ calls). Young men ran out to fill your tank, check your oil, try your tire pressure and wipe your windshield when you stopped for gas. Entertainment. Weather prediction was terrible.
