My family and I recently moved across the country. Our gas and electric bills have been smaller since we moved. Public Transportation and Other Amenities. Finally, we are saving due to better public transit. I also suspect that we’ve lowered our carbon footprint a bit as well.

We then looked at how much each item in that group cost us; gas, property and car insurance, maintenance, etc. 400/month gas for truck. 130/month gas for car. Right now, it is not realistic for us to become a one car family. This is an exercise that we wanted to do prior to combining our chequing accounts.

If you drive your own car, you probably have to pay for gas. If you take public transit , you might need to pay for a pass. When you drive your own car, there are additional costs associated with transportation; it’s not just about what you pay for gas.

So, not only do you reduce the pollution from driving an individual vehicle, taking public transit and/or riding your bike also provides you the chance to add a little more exercise to your life. Plus, you are saving money on gas, and aren’t as impacted when they rise.
