My family and I recently moved across the country. While the cost of living in our new town in Pennsylvania is higher than we experienced in Utah, we are actually saving money each month due to downsizing. We then looked at how much each item in that group cost us; gas, property and car insurance, maintenance, etc. We wanted to see where we were spending most of our money, and whether there is any opportunity for us to cut down on any of those bills as a result of the combination of our finances. 400/month gas for truck.

So, not only do you reduce the pollution from driving an individual vehicle, taking public transit and/or riding your bike also provides you the chance to add a little more exercise to your life.
