San Antonio, Texas is our home when we aren’t traveling the world. Daniel took on an extra job doing support work for an online company that he could do from home. We sold extra items that we weren’t using through Craigslist and garage sales. We ate at home a lot and watched our food budget carefully.

Once baby comes, we might become major spenders on toys, a new home, a bigger car and more. As a young mom, I saved like mad – going to garage sales, thrift stores and accepting hand me downs on toys and clothing. The things that give us pleasure vary by temperament. Time of life.

That’s good for the Earth and for personal finances. I happened upon some old canning Mason jars at a garage sale, and now we use those for everything–making iced tea in the summer, putting leftover soup in, holding our homemade laundry detergent. Throwing those away isn’t good for the environment.

Last summer, in my annual ‘Grandma Rie’s Money Camp’ (the week long camp I have with my Grandchildren to help them learn about finances); we had a segment on selling and how companies sell to us. Last week I visited a garage sale. It was eye opening for the 10 year old. He even wanted to repeat the segment.
