Those affected by our recent Great Recession have had the benefits of saving reinforced as well. As a young mom, I saved like mad – going to garage sales, thrift stores and accepting hand me downs on toys and clothing. Members of the ‘Greatest Generation’ suffered through the Great Depression and came out savers.

If we hadn’t sold stocks and mutual funds to come up with the money to close the sale (cash on the table), we wouldn’t have generated a huge capital gain in 2007.

They asked him what would likely cause us to come out of recession. The world wide recession made us all (either of necessity or by choice) a bit more frugal.
