After I had kids, I swapped that time to growing all sorts of interesting heirloom foods in my backyard. Once filled with baskets of toys and my small children, it now houses many of our board games. Growing up in the fifties made me everlastingly grateful for a number of things, such as hot running water, central air conditioning, automatic dishwashers, TV remote control, the internet, personal computers (typewriters really sucked – no backspacing!) Food/shopping. Fast food was rare. People cooked and ate at home.

I got brand new clothes , a stroller, a playpen, toys, blankets, the list goes on and on. In my children’s first few years of life, food was the biggest expense. I cut down a small cedar tree (which grow like weeds on our 6 acres) each year, put it in a tree stand on the porch and put white twinkle lights on it.
