Upholstery work is expensive and hard, but if you do tackle it yourself, you can save big bucks. By tackling my 2 wing back recliner chairs I saved $1400 over the cost of replacing them with new chairs and probably about $1500 over the cost of hiring someone else to recover them. Why not – you ask – you saved so much money.

No kids = no parties or haunted houses = money saved. We do put up decorations (ones I buy at garage sales or thrift stores and reuse each year). If you sew, take off the buttons, zippers, lace, netting or whatever to use later. No kids = no money on candy = no candy wrappers in the landfill. Re-purpose the used costume.

Learn to hem and patch and sew on buttons to repair minor issues with clothing. Use the life out of all your appliances, but save up enough money to replace them quickly if they are nearing the end of their lifespan. This used to be a common occurrence with a shoe repair shop on every main street. Buy good clothing, used.

Buy a dated, smooth-gliding rocker at a garage sale for next to nothing and customize it with several yards of fabric and a staple gun. Buy several wicker baskets a craft store and sew a few loose sacks out of your favorite fabric that you can use to line the baskets. Reupholster Second-Hand Furniture. Order Last Year’s Themes.
