Growing up in the fifties made me everlastingly grateful for a number of things, such as hot running water, central air conditioning, automatic dishwashers, TV remote control, the internet, personal computers (typewriters really sucked – no backspacing!), There were no garage door openers. There was no internet. Entertainment.

We also grow a large garden & lots of flowers, fruit trees & a 100-year-old grapevine. There’s always been garage sales/flea markets, library, state parks, fishing. We have sheep, an old goat, chickens, guineas, dogs & cats. But generally, most things have gone up in cost.

When I was growing up, two of my neighbors shared a snowblower each winter. One of them kept it at their house in the garage, but each time there was a snow storm they each got their chance to use it, taking turns doing both of their driveways. You go to the library to borrow books, so why not share the ones you buy with your friends?

Until, that is, she went out to the ‘library’ with her book one day, sat on the outdoor privy and got stung on the bottom by a bee! But I never felt poor growing up.
