I scouted for tiles as I went to garage sales for other items and was lucky enough to find not only a big lot of beautiful travertine tiles, but also two very usable Kohler bath faucets – for which we bought one replacement part off the Kohler repair site. Today, my husband and I can’t park a car in our garage because it is filled with 5 bikes, 2 scooters, 2 wagons, and a big wheel. At my age, my parents had 20 years of kid-free living ahead of them to focus on their own career goals and to save for their retirement.

What about the old refrigerator in the garage you only use when you have a party? I kept one checking account as the working account and had my salary paid automatically into it. I arranged for the mortgage and car payments to be made directly from it and a set amount to go into a savings account.

This is the first year I started a Disney/vacation savings account of $25 a week. I keep a stack of big totes in the corner of the garage and we add yard sale items to them year-round. I did this because I wanted to have a cushion in case we ever came up short. Yard Sale = $493.95. This year we had a LOT since we are moving.
