Although I live 200+ miles away from my two grandkids, I try to get them for a week or so during the summer. There are many documented benefits to utilizing grandparents to watch grandkids. Although using relatives to kid sit can be fraught with stress, anxiety and cause for family arguments, many families do it successfully.

If you are a parent, some day you will most likely become a grandparent. Being a grandparent is tons more fun than parenting. We spoiled our children and we apparently are even more intent on doing so with our grandchildren! I only remember staying with them once without parents around. They rarely gave us toys or money.

When I was a young adult, out of college and into my first years of marriage, I cringed at the thought of getting money from my parents. I thought there would be ‘strings’ attached to the use of the money. Perhaps though, you are doing your parents a disservice by refusing their gifts. I wanted to prove myself.

But you are a super busy parent, with work, continuing education, business travel, your kid’s other activities, church and the myriad of other things that demand your time and attention. Use the below as a guideline only. My grandkids were 6 and 3 and they really got into this! You want your kid to be financially savvy.

She is soon to be 92 years old and uses her position as the family matriarch to teach the rest of us to be grateful. When she saw that her great-grandchildren were not writing thank you notes for her gifts to them, she sent their parents a set of Thank you note cards with envelopes and postage!

The money in the IRA can be used during your lifetime, but then can accumulate tax free while the next guy in line for it takes minimum distributions over his life. If they are primary beneficiaries, the parents or guardians may have to go to court and get themselves designated as able to manage the account for the child.

The Grandkids are 9 and 12 now with lots of time before they have to start supporting themselves somehow. I didn’t even realize that most jobs required a doctorate in Psychology to really use the knowledge in a career. Another criteria used for this pick might be the length of the commute or the frequency of travel.
