The season of family, faith, food, and…shopping… collective sigh… The spending part of Christmas can get crazy, so I’ve come up with a list of ideas to find some extra cash for your Christmas spending if you’re coming up short. I use this spreadsheet every year. Hopefully, that’s your goal too.

I use this spreadsheet. In 2013, I had a year long series, Christmas Savings Club , to encourage everyone to set aside money each month for the holidays. My husband has made hundreds of extra dollars by using his experience as a collegiate swimmer and high school swim coach to teach private swimming lessons. Consider tutoring.

The holidays are a fun time to get together with friends and family. It’s not too late to pull a holiday party together for Christmas or New Year’s and you don’t have to blow your budget. I use our own silverware, mostly because I hate eating with plastic ware. Gifts must be from a thrift store.

We do put up decorations (ones I buy at garage sales or thrift stores and reuse each year). Bring in your slightly used, but in good shape costume and pick one from those others brought in – as a swap. Encourage your child to use their imaginations to come up with a costume out of materials on hand at home.

My husband and I discussed some ideas over our holiday break and we decided on 2 solid must-achieve financial goals for the year. Shame on us for dragging our feet on this for too long. We blew through our health savings account, and now need to save another $10k so we’re not caught off guard if another emergency were to happen.
