Most of us are renters at some point in our lives, usually when we are first starting out – or perhaps in the seasons when our lives are changing. Years ago, we rented a unit in one of two quadruplex buildings owned by our landlord. The landlord also let me pick some of the seeded concord grapes growing up the hill.

Not everyone is cut out to be a landlord or landlady. Deductible closing costs include points or prepaid interest on your mortgage and your share of the prorated property taxes. However, we have not been able to claim that loss due to the overly complex and landlord unfriendly income tax laws we now have.
