January 2021 was a month of extremes in my family’s finances. Found Money in January: $1681. I started donating plasma in January!!! A friend referred me and by the end of January, I made $591. Credit cards are a tricky subject and we pay off the balance every month, so I will write more about this soon.

Credit Card Cash Back Redemptions in April: $439.62. Years ago during our Debt Freedom Plan, I avoided using credit cards, not because we had credit card debt, but I was trying to limit our overall spending. However, once we paid off all of that debt, I started playing the credit card game.

January and February were stellar months with finding money. Credit Card Cash Back: $175. I redeemed $175 for gift cards from our business credit card’s cashback program. We use this credit card for almost all of our business expenses and we pay it off every month.

And of course, I used a gift card from my Erie YourTurn rewards to pay for the remaining 50%, so this was $0 out of pocket. I love it when I can stretch my gift cards! I don’t have it back yet (I think they said to expect it to be approved by the end of January?), but at least I got the ball rolling.

Where I Found $370 Debt Snowball Money in January

In January, I found $370 to put towards our debt: 1. We use a Discover credit card to pay for monthly expenses at our business. I haven’t redeemed points in a long time and I had $300 worth of points that I redeemed for Discover gift cards. It is very un-Dave Ramsey-like but it works for us.

In January, I found more extra money than I ever have and I was so excited about it, BUT unexpectedly, February…blew.it.out.of.the.water! I had an unexpected surprise hit my credit card in February.
