Our son is 29 and biological. My mom cut coupons and sewed her own clothes and mine, as well. We lived off my salary and banked Alan’s even before we were married so that we could build our own house (literally), paying cash as we went. I grew up in banking and held other finance-related positions during my working years.

Used clothing, toys, and necessities sell very well. Things like bassinets and newborn clothing are in high demand and sell quickly! My son has been doing this for about a year now and averages a few hundred dollars a week. For the Internet, I am using my son’s and paying half the monthly bill, which is only $30.

Gone were the days of having one bank account and only having to keep very simple records. Would I have enough to house, feed and clothe them? Most days I try to do some preparation with my sons, daughter-in-laws and grandchildren – to help them learn financial concepts and acquire the ability to wisely manage their money.

Two words that our psyches and bank accounts can dread. I love, Love, LOVE clothes. I am a military wife and our clothing budget is Spartan, at best. As a grad student, I had hit a few “vintage” shops but had never really looked to outfit myself or children using resale clothing. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

If we wanted extra money for something like school clothes or makeup, we were given a chore to earn it. The first thing I do every morning is make coffee, sit down at my desk, open my budget spreadsheet, log into the bank, and enter anything that came out overnight plus what we spent the previous day. It was rarely just handed out.
