Our mom stayed home to raise us kids; she went to work part-time in the local school system after both my brother and I were in school. My dad was a blue-collar worker – a machine operator on the railroad who sometimes got laid off for periods of time in the winter. We don’t have to spend a lot for entertainment.

Outside of my blogging life, I work full time as a magazine editor/designer for a large national company and I also teach part-time at a local University. And for fun, I study new ways to save money in my life (yeah, seriously, I find that fun… ), garden, and spend time with my wonderful pets. I Like Having Nice Things.

We shopped at garage sales, turned down the heat, combined errands to use less gas, didn’t buy a lot of prepared food, cooked at home and the like. We spent practically nothing on entertainment. I worked a part time job the weekends he wasn’t working. Peggy: Oh yes! That took forever!

The grown birds also provided entertainment and exercise the day a neighborhood dog broke into the enclosure and the birds scattered all over the neighborhood. Now that I think back, that probably provided the neighbors with quite a bit of entertainment as well. We all went chasing after them with a bird net.

I work full time in IT and my wife works part time in retail. If we want something today we save for it and then buy it. We cut way back on entertainment and vacations during debt repayment. We’re a family of five, including, me, my wife and 3 children: 15 year old fraternal twins and a 12 year old son.
