This was a time I had been thinking about not teaching anymore and staying home, so I was looking for new ideas to be thrifty. He is also thrifty and is much better at budgeting than I. I have made many money mistakes over the years – when I was single, I bought so many clothes and books! My cat satisfying his thirst!

Learn to hem and patch and sew on buttons to repair minor issues with clothing. Learn how to remove spots and do it as soon as the clothing gets dirty. Buy good clothing, used. Avoid buying cheap clothing new. Pass down serviceable clothing from child to child. Use up your food. Plan uses for your leftovers.

For many, the end of the year holiday shopping frenzy can override our saner, more thrifty selves. Winter clothes. These get donated to thrift stores or placed in consignment shops so you might keep checking your local stores for these. We get desperate to find gifts for everyone on the list. I know I do. Did you know that Americans dispose more than 700 billion pounds of paper, plastic, glass, wood, food, metal, clothing, electronics, etc. When you have mess to clean up, use cloth napkins, sponges, or dishclothes that can be washed instead of reaching for paper towels. Go thrifty. 7000 billion pounds!!! Reuse what you can.

Participate in local food drives and donations and involve your kids in your actions. You can make it fun for you kids by running a household scavenger hunt in which you reward you children for finding household items to donate, such as clothes, toys, books, old appliances, and canned goods. And vice versa!)

Being thrifty stays an ingrained habit. In doing so, many become adept at thriftiness. Would I have enough to house, feed and clothe them? If you plan to donate it, will the organization use it for the purpose you intended, or spend it on perks for their employees? Will they squander it or use it wisely?
