This past summer I decided to start composting. Benefits of Composting. Before digging into how I convinced them to start composting, I want to give a quick blurb on why composting is important. By composting, I was finally doing something and working toward something to keep creation healthier.

My composting adventures all started about 9 years ago when our local Penn State Cooperative Extension office offered a free composting bin (the round one in the picture) when you attended their free composting seminar. I have a system going, but I am a laid back composter. Usually, I'm wearing my bathrobe.

Basically there are two reasons to compost. The first is to recycle leftover food, grass cuttings, and fallen leaves that might ordinarily end up in a landfill. The second is supplementary to the first–you use the compost as fertilizer. There are many ways to store the compost until it’s ready to use.

According to the organization Waste Free Lunches , the average school-age child eating lunches in disposable packaging generates some 67 pounds of waste per school year. For example, most leftover food scraps can even be composted ( other than meat, of course ) so they can be brought home if a school or workplace doesn’t do composting.

Stop Buying Things In Plastic Beth from My Plastic Free Life has pretty much eliminated plastic from her life. Glass or metal can last a lifetime should you wish to reuse either one and are better recycling material than plastic is. Cardboard boxes can be used over and over again before needing to be recycled.

We compost much of our food and garden scraps. But when I took our recycling bins out to the curb this week, I noticed that there is still room for improvement.
