That was the year that we made the goal of paying off the last of our non-mortgage debts and we achieved it by September of that year. …enter 2023 We have not one, but two teenage high school daughters. We want to assist our daughters with their college expenses. We have a number that we want to save for each daughter.

However a few years ago, we found ourselves with too much debt and not enough cash. Within a year after settlement, we found ourselves with a lot of debt, not enough cash flow, and very little set aside for emergencies. We had our daughters later in life and at a crucial time in our lives, I stopped our retirement contribution.

I’ve been an architect, day-care teacher to toddlers, and library clerk, but am currently a SAHM to a 14yo son and 9yo daughter. The first few years after graduating, I racked up a large credit card debt and bought a new SUV that cost approximately the same as my annual salary. We share our home with a 70lb rescued mutt.

Right before the pandemic started, I opened 529 College Savings Accounts for our daughters. My oldest was in eighth grade and one of my goals for 2020 was to start saving consistently for both daughters’ college education. Since March of 2020, over $1300 has been transferred into my daughters’ 529 College Savings Accounts.

I wonder if that could be part of our national debt problem. Even so his surviving daughter had to live off charity. He ended up hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt and only salvaged his estate by selling (after his death) his civil war memoirs. Grant also did poorly in personal finance. Money Tips'

We all have been taught that a college degree is the path to the good life, but is it still – when students are emerging with heavy debt and little chance of a lucrative job? I graduated from State U with a liberal arts degree in the early 1970s – when there was a world wide recession followed by stagflation. What are the alternatives?

My daughter will start kindergarten (remember when I announced my pregnancy ?) – I can’t believe how fast time flies! I will graduate with my master’s in communication disorders and start my new career as a speech language pathologist.
