We should expect more, not less, from our daughters and granddaughters in the work arena. At the same time, we have to establish different expectations on the home front for our sons and grandsons. We must have the same or similar career expectations for our daughters as we do for our sons. I think it would.

Back in my teens and early twenties, Mom used to yell at me about not carrying enough cash. Either I would be walking or using my last quarter in the pay phone to call home and beg someone to come get me. As an adult, I use both cash and credit as well as checks. If I buy anything online, I use credit. They had no cash.

Buying used clothes can be a great way to save money, especially if you have rapidly growing children. You can defray some of your clothing costs by shopping for deals at used clothing stores or thrift stores. I’ve been an architect, day-care teacher to toddlers, and library clerk, but am currently a SAHM to a 14yo son and 9yo daughter. I carefully save my seed packets to use over several years and even harvest some seeds from my previous year’s plants so I don’t need to buy as many in the future. Enjoying some outdoor time.

I once took my mom’s tap-dance dress she wore in the 70s, and used it as a ‘tap dance’ princess costume in the 90s. My daughter did ballet, and I would say, take the costume and make something fun out of it. Same for my son who only loves Dinosaurs and states. IT was cute but a bit of a joke years later).

A reader wrote me an email telling me about some family troubles, including the story of her son leaving an abusive marriage, with his little daughter in tow. My almost 12 year old son needs a phone, as I broke his. He just used it for youtube, Google, Facebook Messenger Kids and taking pictures.

My daughter lives in California and we talk regularly. My son and his family live in Montana. But I did learn some things that I find I use today. I save money where I can to keep it frugal, like by using apps, coupons, value menus, etc. They work, at least they did the last time I used them. Wow, time flies.
