In previous years, I would create a long list of financial goals, only to have little accomplished by the end of the December. I almost stopped writing goals down altogether. In 2018, we decided to focus on just 2 main financial goals and before I share my 2019 goals I thought I would give you a recap on 2018.

Our Debt Freedom Plan has been a long winding road. The journey started in 2012 when we bought an office building for our business and then found ourselves with a lot of debt and not enough cash flow. To ease my anxiety about our new loans, we took the Financial Peace University home course and it changed how we thought about debt.

One of the best ways to do that is to set realistic goals. In fact, one of my favorite things to do at the end of December each year is to set financial goals for the new year. I’m convinced that I’ve had such good luck achieving many of my financial goals because I write them down and keep myself accountable.

Right before the pandemic started, I opened 529 College Savings Accounts for our daughters. My oldest was in eighth grade and one of my goals for 2020 was to start saving consistently for both daughters’ college education. My Upromise strategy will help with our goal. I have used the extra money to pay off debt, fund family trips, or build up our Christmas savings. I donated plasma 4 times in May which is short of my goal of 8 times. This money was put into my Christmas Savings account. March 2021 – I found $747. Yep, I found a $20 bill while running on the beach!

Life suddenly changed for most of us in March 2020 and this past year of the pandemic has reinforced how important an emergency fund is. Create a separate savings account and call it your Emergency Fund. Be diligent about how you use this account. Both books provided the blueprint for Our Debt Freedom Plan.
