Every month going forward, transfer this money into a separate savings account that is connected to your checking account.

One way to do this in a two income family is to live off of one income and bank the other. Figure out what you need to live and put the rest in a secure account. Put the holiday gift of cash into your account. Put the savings you made at the grocery with coupons into the savings account. Keep saving.
