The rent-purchase agreement allows the buyer to live in the home while paying the seller rent, and the part of the rent goes toward the home’s sale price. If the buyer still can’t get a loan at the end of the rental term, the seller can finance the deal themselves or keep the buyer as tenant.

We sold extra items that we weren’t using through Craigslist and garage sales. Finances have definitely been the biggest strain in our 11 years of marriage. As a young mom, I saved like mad – going to garage sales, thrift stores and accepting hand me downs on toys and clothing. As a retiree, I started out as a saver, unsure how the finances were all going to work out (especially since I retired during the last recession). Over my life, I have been primarily a saver.

Sure I knew about the ‘White sales’ – the ones stores used to have in January on sheets and towels and such, but I really hadn’t a clue that there is a best time to buy many other things! However, I wait until spring and summer to buy decorations – and get them at garage sales. Winter clothes. Brand name TVs.

Not many – but by planning ahead now you might find ways to lessen the expenses you will face next month and use the annual experience as a teachable moment in your child’s personal finance education. I love to shop garage sales. Involve Your Child in Planning and Budgeting. using what they already have.

That’s good for the Earth and for personal finances. I happened upon some old canning Mason jars at a garage sale, and now we use those for everything–making iced tea in the summer, putting leftover soup in, holding our homemade laundry detergent. Throwing those away isn’t good for the environment.

Last summer, in my annual ‘Grandma Rie’s Money Camp’ (the week long camp I have with my Grandchildren to help them learn about finances); we had a segment on selling and how companies sell to us. Last week I visited a garage sale. It was eye opening for the 10 year old. He even wanted to repeat the segment.
