I’m always looking for ways to save my family money to help us get through current higher food and gas prices and achieve our big financial goals. I planted a small garden this year: 2 tomato plants, 1 cucumber, 1 pepper plant that sadly didn’t make it, and 1 butternut squash. My Frugal Shenanigans!

I harvested Roma tomatoes from my one and only plant and made a big batch of my homemade roasted tomato sauce. But in the end, $155 is still a gift.

My spouse and I have gained quite a bit of experience planting bushes, trees and flowers over the years. Our two biggest experiences were in planting thousands of pine seedlings from the state nursery on our 40 acre farm (in our younger years)and planting around 3000 spring flowering bulbs on our current 6 acres. So do finances.

It can be something financially prudent like starting a retirement account or something totally frivolous like saving for a vacation. The important thing is to get started; any major goal that inspires you to do that is a good start. You can do this with any goal, no matter how crazy big or far off it is. Put a System in Place.

Last summer, I hired someone to completely dismantle and remove my largest box garden and ground garden, and plant grass seed for me at a very reasonable price, especially since it took him just a few hours and it would have taken me an entire weekend. I kept my small box garden which is large enough for just 2 tomato plants and a few herbs.

Our financial goals are still important to us and we want to hit them regardless of the rising prices. Homemade Basil and Walnut Pesto: I made my second batch of homemade pesto from my two garden basil plants. We’ve seen higher grocery and fuel bills lately, so we’re upping our frugal game to help the budget.

As somebody who has always believed in the power of a plant based diet, and worked hard to stay healthy and conscious about what she is eating, the holidays are pure sabotage.
