About five years ago, I started thrifting. As a grad student, I had hit a few “vintage” shops but had never really looked to outfit myself or children using resale clothing. My husband now teases me that I am the Indiana Jones of thrifting. Successful thrifting takes a little effort. And watch for a Thrifting Angel.

Not only will renovations provide pleasure and function to you, but they could increase the sale value of your home a bit. When I redid ours, I used that spray meant to re enamel tubs to re-finish the vanity tops. Garage or estate sales. Thrift shops. My son had a tile cutter which he loaned to me. Plan ahead.

I had three baby showers when I was pregnant for my son–one from each side of the family and one from my co-workers. All those items got plenty of use as all three of my kids used them. Many of the other items I needed like cloth diapers and clothes for the baby in bigger sizes I bought from garage sales.

Are you a ‘buy it new’ snob – one of those people who shudder at the thought of using someone else’s cast off stuff? I swore I’d never buy used junk again… but now I’ve changed my mind. Fashion changes and new or nearly new clothing gets sold at sales or donated to charity.

I always give my son some incentive to spend the afternoon trying on his clothes! My son has 2 pairs of pants that he rarely wore. Spiffing up what you already have with new item is a great way to get extended use out of your kid’s clothing. Try everything on. Take the list with you when your shopping.
