What to Do When You and Your Spouse Have Differing Financial Goals

We bought a house in 2012; we both have fulfilling careers and we have two little dogs that we consider fur babies. My financial goal is to save up enough to travel extensively (such as an around-the-world trip or maybe volunteering abroad for a longer period of time). Our emergency fund. I am totally paraphrasing the year, but had it not been for the money in our emergency savings, we would most likely have used credit cards to survive. We reduced our spending where we could, but the money to pay any shortfall each month came from our emergency fund. Yep, life was good.

It happened in 2006 and again in late 2012 to early 2013. Our current savings is not at a true emergency fund level of 3-6 months, but further down our plan, we will save up to that level.
