A few years back, my extended family took a trip to Holland, Michigan. I’m 47, married, and living amongst the cornfields in a college town in the Midwest U.S. Before kids, I spent my free-time volunteering at a stray rescue shelter for dogs. One of the things many of you may or may not know about me is that my entire university education has been acquired while working full time. Here is a little history: Ever since I was a little kid I have had a keen interest in medicine. In Grade 12 I received a scholarship for the college that offered this program.

When I was a young adult, I hadn’t a clue how to go about deciding what I wanted to do ‘when I grow up’ I picked a college major solely on what I enjoyed studying – without any thought or investigation as to how it might (or might not) lead to a job some day. It didn’t. Pick based on hours worked/lifestyle.

Tell us about you and your family. We paid for braces, college tuition for my son, and did fun stuff like traveling while we were paying off debt. We went out to eat with our families, and I went around saying “WE PAID OFF OUR HOUSE!” I may work on buying another rental property (with cash.)

He didn’t have his first job until the summer between high school graduation and college. I had reasonably good grades and planned to go to college after graduating. If they are in dozens of activities that are important to them as well, there may not even be time for a job. It’s like having a full-time job.
