I then divided that new number by 12 and that is the dollar amount that I am going to transfer to a savings account every month. What makes me cringe is realizing how much we spent on Christmas in 2010.

I think $2000-$3000 will give you more of a cushion to start with and less of a chance that you'll need to resort to a credit card or loan when a disaster strikes. It was a scary time for us.
