After I became a mother, finances became much more complicated. While we were still renting an apartment, I researched areas with lower property taxes, scouted out my ideal neighborhoods, and waited for a smaller, less expensive house to come on the market. A few years back, my extended family took a trip to Holland, Michigan.

Like many across the globe, my family’s finances are a bit unstable due to the Coronvius Pandemic. I’ve shared before that April is the most expensive month of the year for us because our homeowners/auto insurance and property taxes are all due, along with any federal or state taxes that we might owe.

Although my parents never specifically taught me about finances, they lived a frugal life by necessity. I learned from the best, but I believe that a personal finance course should be a requirement for both high school and college graduation. I grew up in banking and held other finance-related positions during my working years.

Financially speaking, he focuses on building the business and I focus on managing our home and finances. We have thought about moving to a larger home with more space, but a smaller home means lower utility bills, homeowners’ insurance premiums, maintenance, and property taxes. We increased our income. We drive older cars.
