I’m constantly trying to optimize our spending to find ways to save money, but still live quite comfortably and well. In April, we saved quite a bit of money by comparison shopping, and choosing thrift first. The big hitters this month saved us about $500. That’s money that stayed in our accounts.

It takes time and money to get to and from your vacation home. You feel obligated to go, since you spent the money on it or you need to go to work on it. Your family won’t gather there anymore. We bought our condo as a family gathering spot, some place fun to come to visit with each other.

Donate good clothing you really can’t use to a non-profit and bank the tax deduction. Use the life out of all your appliances, but save up enough money to replace them quickly if they are nearing the end of their lifespan. Instead of taking the family to a movie, have a home movie night with friends and family.
