This past winter I cleaned out closets and drawers in my quest to minimize and downsize our stuff and donated everything to the thrift store, rather than hold on to it for the spring sale. This money was put into my Christmas Savings account. Last year I made very little money and swore I was done having yard sales.

In April, we received a small tax refund and I put $100 of our refund into our Christmas Savings account. We didn’t sell much, mainly because I didn’t think we were going to be home for the neighborhood yard sale this year and I took a van full of stuff to the thrift store about a month before the yard sale.

I keep separate binders for our Business Expenses & Statements , Business Taxes , Health Savings Account , Retirement , my passwords (with alphabet tabs), and Workouts. But I have seen a variety of binders at yard sales and thrift stores for pocket change. I am a bit obsessive about them being all white.

Being self-employed, we have a higher starter fund on hand and when we pay off our non-mortgage debt, we will save to at least 6 months expenses and maybe even more. Remember this account is specifically for your emergency fund. I’m always amazed by the amount store tags I see on clothing and household item at thrift stores.

Now that we’ve paid off six figures of non-mortgage debt , we are working on saving 6 months’ expenses and maybe even more. Consider setting the money aside in a savings account that isn’t immediately accessible and doesn’t have an ATM attached to it This will help to avoid any impulsive non-emergency spending.

Have a big box ready to take the throw-away items and another for anything that is good enough to go to the local thrift store. I kept one checking account as the working account and had my salary paid automatically into it. What is the worst thing that will happen if I trash it? Be ruthless!
