Life suddenly changed for most of us in March 2020 and this past year of the pandemic has reinforced how important an emergency fund is. If you’re able, maybe use some of your stimulous money to put towards building an emergency fund. What helped us through that time was the money we had saved in our emergency account.

Because we were spending so much money on appliances, we bought an extended warranty. Fast forward to early March 2020…pre-shutdown…my refrigerator was leaking and the freezer lights stopped working. He didn’t even bother trying to repair the leak, but he told me it might fix itself. Am I a sucker?

In 2020, our financial goals were to read, research, and understand both college and retirement planning. <<— Once we paid off our non-mortgage debts in 2019, we started saving some of the debt snowball money for college savings. That money didn’t go away once we paid off the debts, it just went toward other things.

We’ve had several instances over the years that have shaped how we viewed and managed our money. I am totally paraphrasing the year, but had it not been for the money in our emergency savings, we would most likely have used credit cards to survive. January & February 2020 – Life is good! March 2020 arrived.

There were a lot more fun and purposeful things we could have done with that money than pay the lender. But $1000 was not nearly enough money to cover sudden emergencies in both our home and business. In January of 2020, we made summer plans (and bought airline tickets) to go see friends who moved to Europe. Brain dump!

This side hustle income was mainly used for the fun stuff, such as camping, home renovations & repairs, and needs for our kids. As hard as it was to do, we stopped contributing to our retirement for about three years and applied that money to these loans. In 2020, we still use and are thankful for Medi-share.
