I buy my supplies there and I buy clothes, jewelry and handbags there as well. In fact, the main reason I keep up the shop is so that I can have some spending money. I put almost everything I make on Etsy, back into Etsy. Since Nathan has been unemployed and money has been really tight, that flow has been invaluable to me.

And then in December I went to sell some clothes at Buffalo Exchange. So I didn’t order it. I did visit it at the GAP store though, seriously. I’d go in and pick it up. Feel the leather. And then put it back. And they had one. And it was $30. I made $20 off the things I sold. So I bought it. FOR 10 DOLLARS! I was so excited.

We got our clothes as hand me down from older cousins or from thrift stores. While I was growing up, my family didn’t have much money. My dad worked first as a meat cutter and then at a factory. During the recession in the ’80s, he was unemployed for nearly 2.5 My mom was an at home day care provider.

My mom expected both my brother and I to find employment when we reached the legal age of 15, and enforced it by having us pay for half of our school clothes (well, the ones we wanted. She was willing to pay for less trendy, less expensive styles). We both had jobs throughout high school and I’ve never been unemployed since.
